Electronic Components Package Sizes in Inch and MM

Electronic component packages such as 01005, 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, and 1206 refer to standardized surface-mount device (SMD) sizes, each defined by their physical dimensions in both inches and millimeters. These codes are widely used for resistors, capacitors, and other SMD components, and choosing the right size is important for compatibility, space management, and circuit performance.

Typical SMD package sizes

  • 01005: This is one of the smallest available packages, measuring 0.01 inches × 0.005 inches (0.4 mm × 0.2 mm). Its ultra-miniature size makes it suitable for highly compact devices like smartphones and modern wearables.
  • 0201: At 0.02 inches × 0.01 inches (0.6 mm × 0.3 mm), this size is also used where space is very limited, offering a balance between size and ease of handling.
  • 0402: Measuring 0.04 inches × 0.02 inches (1.0 mm × 0.5 mm), 0402 components are common in densely packed printed circuit boards (PCBs) in consumer electronics.
  • 0603: This size (0.06 inches × 0.03 inches or 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm) is broadly used in both commercial and industrial electronics, striking a balance between miniaturization and manageable handling.
  • 0805: The 0805 package is 0.08 inches × 0.05 inches (2.0 mm × 1.25 mm), and is a standard choice for many general-purpose applications due to its slightly larger size and ease of placement.
  • 1206: At 0.12 inches × 0.06 inches (3.2 mm × 1.6 mm), this package is preferred when higher power dissipation or ease of manufacturing is desired.
No. Package Inches(L x W) Milimeters(L x W)
1 01005 0.016" × 0.008" 0.4 × 0.2 mm
2 0201 0.024" × 0.012" 0.6 × 0.3 mm
3 0402 0.04" × 0.02" 1.0 × 0.5 mm
4 0603 0.06" × 0.03" 1.6 × 0.8 mm
5 0805 0.08" × 0.05" 2.0 × 1.25 mm
6 1206 0.12" × 0.06" 3.2 × 1.6 mm
7 1210 0.12" × 0.10" 3.2 × 2.5 mm
8 1812 0.18" × 0.12" 4.5 × 3.2 mm
9 2010 0.20" × 0.10" 5.0 × 2.5 mm
10 2512 0.25" × 0.12" 6.3 × 3.2 mm

These SMD packages are part of the standardization efforts to make automated assembly and circuit design more efficient. Larger packages such as 1206 provide higher power-handling capability and are easier to place by hand, while smaller packages such as 01005 offer maximum compactness for the smallest electronic products. Choosing the right package depends on factors such as available space, required electrical characteristics, and manufacturing technology.

In addition to these, there are also larger or specialized SMD sizes, and for discrete components like transistors and diodes, you’ll find packages such as SOT-23, SOT-323, and SOD-123, all with their own dimensional standards and usage scenarios.
